Essential oils

This week we had the lovely Stacia come be our wise woman. For those who couldn't make it here are some of the things we learned...

Essential oils  can be an easy part of our families' healthcare.  Stacia did a great job at demonstrating the many benefits of pure essential oils from doterra. I used essential oils during pregnancy, labor and delivery and plan on using them with my kids.  But my life is super busy so I need simple ways to use them!

TIPS from Tuesday:

-You don’t have to use many drops~ more is not always better. One drop of peppermint oil is equal to 28 cups of peppermint tea. (By the way, we discussed how peppermint can dry you up if you are breastfeeding, but a little peppermint behind the ears wont affect your milk supply, but WILL help with a headache.)

-Essential oils are quite easy to use.  Simple is important for new moms who are sleep deprived and figuring out life with a baby.

- Ways to use essential oil: Rub on the on the bottom of your or your baby's feet or different areas of the body (dilute with a carrier oil like coconut oil for children), smell the oil straight from the body, diffuse in a diffuser, put a few drops in a spray bottle or take internally (not for babies.)

-A valuable resource for moms is this book.    It has information about pregnancy, birth and health issues that you face in childhood and beyond.

-My personal favorite doterra oils to have on hand are Lavender, Peppermint and On guard. There are so many that it is hard to choose, but these are my top ones:

Lavendar is known as the “universal oil” and can be used for almost anything.  No home should be without it. Lavender calms anxiety and is a natural stress reliever. The fragrance is calming, relaxing and balancing – physically and emotionally (and don't we ALL need some of that.) Lavender is excellent for medicinal purposes as well. It is also great for your skin! It can be applied neat (undiluted), inhaled or diffused.

A few of the many uses:

  • Stress reducer
  • Helps you get to sleep (This is my number one way I use it.)
  • Relieves headaches
  • Bug bites/ bee stings
  • Minor burns
  • Allergies
  • Bruises
  • Sunburn Relief
  • Add to moisturizing cream and use on face
  • Helps with bedwetting

Peppermint is one of the oldest and highest regarded herbs. It is well-known for helping with respiratory and digestive issues. Rub it on sore muscles, smell to relieve congestion, rub on a sick tummy or drink a drop in tea of water to soothe nausea.

Some of the many uses are:

  • Aid in Digestion
  • Soothe upset stomach
  • Reduce fever
  • Help with headaches
  • Energy boost
  • Improve concentration/mental alertness
  • Helps with bruises
  • Helps with tick removal
  • Flavor water
  • Boost immune system
  • Curb appetite
  • Help Poison Ivy/Oak

On guard is a blend of different essential oils and it smells great. It is highly effective in supporting the immune system and good healthThis is the first oil I reach for when there is a sign of a cold or flu. We also use it in a spray bottle by the diaper changing station.

Some of the many uses:

  • Fights germs & infections
  • Helps with strep throat
  • Cleanses the air
  • Kills mold
  • Household cleaner
  • Fights fungus

There are many, many other oils that are beneficial, but these are great and have so many uses.
